How a Drug Detox Works

Many people think of a drug detox as simply (but painfully) lying in bed and going through the irritating and punishing withdrawals but there is a more detailed and scientific side to look at. When you are going through a drug detox, what does your body release? The toxic residue or in other words the toxins in your body that have been built up from using the drug for quite some time is what gets released during the drug detox. The toxins are what cause the cravings to occur. Once they are released, the physical cravings will start to go away. This is essential for you to have a successful drug detox.

After the toxins are eliminated from your system, you have to work on the mental issues that the addiction has caused. You are still mentally addicted to the drug and you always will be for the rest of the life. Gambling addicts probably don’t go through physical withdrawals (except for the more severe cases) but the mental withdrawals and cravings to gamble later on in life even when healed after the drug detox.

There is also something weird that happens to some addicts that get cleaned up which can cause them to end up using the drugs again. IV drug users may feel a trigger injection and the high that they feel when they shoot a drug will be felt without doing any drugs. Just in the middle of the day it will randomly happen sometime later in their life. It may be more of a mental thing but it can happen and this can trigger the person to go back on the drugs again.
